Iconic Homes of 30A Series: “Washaway” aka “The Grayton House”
Welcome to 10 Hotz Avenue in Grayton Beach – 30A’s most historic, and possibly most iconic home. Originally built in the late 1890’s, this home is affectionately known as the “Washaway”, known for its storied run-ins and floating excursions with Hurricanes throughout it’s 120yr+ life. On more than one occasion (in times past when the home sat on the ground – now elevated on pylons), 10 Hotz literally washed away in the storms, being salvaged and creatively dragged back into place by horses, mules, and locals.
Longstanding as 30A’s oldest home still in operation, The “Washaway” (also known as the Grayton House) has a history like no other in the area. Stories of Al Capone, Coast Guard Takeovers, locally famous families, rebirths and more.
In 2019, “The Washaway” came up for sale and many thought the end of the home was near as the property sits on a large, prime lot with Gulf views – perfect for re-development. Luckily, a man of vision, along with a few caring investors came along to preserve (As best as possible) a part of 30A’s history. Daniel Brock with Coast is Clear properties, a skilled contractor and visionary – re-imagined 10 Hotz Avenue in its best use to last another 100+ years of legacy.
